Does the bank have to give me a reason for a charge?
Yes. Under FCA rules the bank must justify every fee. If they can't, they refund. Ombudsman decisions consistently side with customers on unclear or unfair charges.
How long does the bank have to respond?
Eight weeks from your written complaint. After that you can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge.
What if I authorised a payment but was tricked?
That's authorised push payment (APP) fraud. Since 7 October 2024 the mandatory reimbursement rule means most UK banks must refund you within 5 business days unless they can prove gross negligence.
